Description
This four-session course introduces the student to the ancient native American traditions of twining by making a simple twined bag which can be used as a purse, carrier, or tote bag. The course will include a history of Cherokee twining and its comparisons to other textile processes. Cotton Macramé cord will be used with the first project, but the use of non-traditional repurposed materials such as scrap cotton fabrics and polyethylene will be demonstrated as well.

September Open Press-Simple Relief

Description
In our September “Open Press” session, we explore a variety of relief print processes that are possible using a single run of the press. The host will guide visitors through test prints using cardboard cutouts, linoleum blocks, a collagraph plate and a Lego matrix. A new feature of Open Press is “Print of the Month”, a chance to study and discuss an artist’s print selected from our archives.

Description
This course provides an introduction to the Japanese technique of paper folding. Students will follow along with the instructor to make origami animals and decorative models. The course will include a history of the origins and international growth of origami, its connections to geometry and mathematics, and its latest technological advances.

Description
Tonight will kick off the printmaking studio program. We’ll explore printmaking’s basic categories and processes, and demonstrate the new press in operation. The featured hands-on project will be a technique of combining monotypes with cardboard relief. Visitors can also come to talk about their experiences, ask questions, and plan for new projects.

Getting ready for Open Press
Pattern Tracing on a Bandana

Description
This course explores the variety of patterns built up from repeating simple geometric shapes on a fabric field. Students lay out a blank white 22″ X 22″ cotton bandana, use pre-cut cardboard geometric shapes to trace outlines with a black permanent marker, and fill in or decorate with acrylic paint. Students can compose their design as uniformly or as freely as they wish.

Barn Quilt Painting

Description
This course introduces students to the popular hobby of Barn Quilt painting. Students select their favorite design from a variety of pattern templates and complete a pre-outlined 12″ square panel using acrylics and masking tape. The finished project is suitable for indoor display or framing.
